Door III • San Miguel de Allende

I first encountered this door in a photograph while researching the doors of San Miguel. What captured my eye was the hardware. I'd never seen anything like it. Then there was the burnt distressed door itself, which had so much character. holding secrets of its own.

Recreating it from a single photo was a true "dive into the deep end" challenge. I even dug out my stained glass tools to recreate the hardware by soldering over intricate copper foil hinge shapes to mimic the original heavy old iron.

The story came full circle one afternoon my car stopped at a corner - and there it was, The real door! While the building facade was a deeply distressed dark burgundy, the spirit of that burnt wood and whimsical old iron was unmistakable.  This remains one of my most challenging architectural sculptures, featuring the door left slightly ajar to reveal the reflection in the mirror inside.
